George Learns HTML Development Plan

Our goal is to create a project that teaches HTML in a multimedia format. We believe that the delivery system must be a GUI based program.  We want to teach HTML in its oxymoron setting, totally multimedia.  The GUI based program will have sound, lots of graphics and even a video. We hope to also use humor to make the topic more interesting for our students.

After using Flash in class we decided we wanted to create our project utilizing Flash. We knew this program had the power we would require to create the interface we would need to interest our students.  We decided we wanted to use music also and while we were brainstorming we decided to use the “George of the Jungle” theme. We then created a monkey called George that needs to learn HTML. If he does learn HTML he might quit running into trees. We wanted George to fly into the screen with the music and fly into a tree and say “This would not have happened if I knew HTML” on the first screen. And then have George be our guide as we learned HTML together.  We planned on creating the entire project in Flash with screen shots and step by step directions instructing how to create several HTML pages with different attributes. With our jungle music, adorable monkey and slick interface we hoped to make HTML more digestible and enjoyable.

By the end to do all we needed to do we realized we would have to use PowerPoint and Adobe Premiere to finish the project. Flash is the program that ties it all together.  In the beginning George flies in realizes he needs HTML help, and the user click on a banana to go to our PowerPoint show that introduces the concept of HTML. George calls for the HTML expert, Dr. Elliot (aka Kerry) to help him. Dr. Elliot explains what HTML is and how it is used in web page creation. Here is where they also get the HTML assignment. And has more PowerPoint slide shows that we found by Cisco that they can use for further information and explanation.

After the PowerPoint the user goes back to Flash and then a movie with actual screen shots of HTML code. Voice narration gives step by step directions and instruction by Dr. Elliot himself.  The shots explain each tag and attribute for the user. As that tag is discussed it is highlighted too. The movie leads them through doing each task and activity.
