Our Classroom

The next project I believe demonstrates my competency and understanding of instruction. Our Classroom was my choice for the culminating assignment for Dr. Peach’s EDU 556 Advance Wed Design class. It took me a while to decide what exactly I wanted to do for the assignment. I had so many web page ideas and there was a need for all my ideas in my classroom. Many of my other ideas would just be used for one class and for a short amount of time. I thought of one idea that would be used by all my students and other people outside of my classroom.

I had been working on a project outside of graduate school that people called The Paperless Classroom.  The project was action research-based looking at using mobile devices such as personal digital assistants ad handhelds to create a classroom environment that used as little paper as possible. I had been working on the project for a couple of years in my classroom and had presented my ideas and to use PDAs in the classroom at several conferences. I found that I did a lot of training on just how to use a PDA in my class and out in conferences. I would verbally tell them how to use a program and use an emulator to project a device on a screen. I repeated myself a lot and walked over to help people. And many of my students had trouble keeping up with me and needed the directions written down. Also, we had the problem that the students or the educators were not able to remember the steps when they were not with me.

I needed written directions that the students could use at home and at times when I was not there to help. So, I decided to create tutorials on all the major programs and functions of the PDA. I would use numbered steps and create screen shots of the steps at each level. I also decided I would create all my graphics and include a video. With a lot of help from my classmates and Dr. Peach I finished what I considered my best example of my competency in instruction. I saw that I had a diverse population with different instructional needs and decided to better meet those needs. Click here to view Our Classroom.
