What is the
“Paperless Classroom?”
  • We are just like any other Language Arts classroom except we are missing one essential element, paper. We read books on the PDA and write our documents on the PDA. Whatever a regular class would do on a piece of paper we do on a computer that fits in the palm of our hand.

  A Personal Digital Assistant can..
  • Act as a digital organizer that will automatically synchronize  with your PC’s Outlook program .
  • Act as a digital input device that will infrared any document onto your PC or to another PDA and allow any document on your PC to load on the PDA.
  • Act as a  electronic means of a notebook and textbook
  • Act as a tool of  entertainment, allowing you to play games and load your favorite newspaper/ web site for palm use.

It is a note taking device..
  • Windows CE has word document program that is a Compact Edition of  Microsoft Word.
  •  Windows CE will transfer any Word or Word Perfect program and convert to a CE document.
  •  All documents typed into the Notetaker program can be converted to Word or Word Perfect document.
  • NoteTaker recognizes typed, handwritten and JOT recognizer text


  • Used for Homework, Weekly Journals,  Notetaking in class...

Keyboard Input Method
  • To select an input method, tap the arrow key located on the bottom right of the Pocket PC screen. Select Keyboard
  • Tap the Input Panel icon at the right edge of the Command bar.
  • Tap New to open a new note.

The Character Recognizer Input Method…
  • Select the Character Recognizer. Character Recognizer screen displays horizontal lines for you to write.
  • Separate words by tapping on the spc key on the right side of the screen. If you make a mistake, simply use the delete key located at the upper right corner of the Character Recognition screen. The Character Recognition mode includes word recognition to speed your input.

A method for transferring  hand-outs digitally
  • All classroom hand-outs and worksheets can be scanned or transferred from Word Documents to the student’s PDA. Examples are visual aides, D.O.L., test, quizzes, teacher notes and reading assignments.
  • An entire class can be given any information in a matter of minutes through the infrared method. No need for handouts and copy machines.

It is a digital textbook...
  • Text books can be scanned by a scanner or downloaded the internet sites. Examples include Education of Little Tree and Romeo and Juliet.


  • Scanners and true text recognition can scan books and public domain text can be downloaded to the PDA directly through www.ipl.org

Tips for Microsoft Reader
  • Tap on First page. To "turn" pages, simply hit the arrow in the upper right side of the screen.
  • Highlight at any spot to add a note, bookmark, or picture
  • When you are done reading the book, tap the "down" arrow to the right of the title Two Fairy Tales. Select Library.

Organizer/Calendar
Entering a Calendar Event
  • Students can organize their addresses, contacts, appointments, assignments
  • Students use a Compact Edition of Microsoft Outlook that can synchronize with their home PC.


    • From the Start menu, select Contacts. Quickly narrow your search using the letter options or enter several letters into the box at the upper right side of the screen.
    • To enter a new contact, tap New. Enter all relevant contact information including e-mail, phone numbers, and addresses. When you are done, tap OK

TODAY page, an useful tool
  • The home page screen has a reminder that lists upcoming appointments and there is also an option to set an alarm to warn you before an appointment hours/minutes before it starts.
  • Calendar can be updated and view on a desktop computer and all contacts, appointments and tasks will be updated on the PDA every time it synchs.

It has several Calculator Programs
  • Students can use several types of calculators through Cool Cal program including Scientific functions such as  Trigonometric and Calculus
  • Pocket PC also has a financial programs such as Microsoft Money

Creating Spread Sheet Capability
  • Uses Pocket Excel to create spread sheets
  • Pocket Excel allows you input your spread sheet data on your PDA and easily synchronizes into your desktop’s Microsoft Excel Program
  • Go to A6 and enter SUM=(A3:A5)

Connect the Pocket PC
to the Computer
  • The installation wizard prompts you to attach your Pocket PC to your computer.
  • Turn on your Pocket PC.
  • If you have a cradle for your Pocket PC, attach the AC adapter to the cradle. Then attach the cable from the cradle directly into your desktop or laptop computer. Be sure that your Pocket PC rests securely in the cradle.

    When the New Partnership dialog box appears on your computer screen, click Yes.
    Synchronization Defaults
    ActiveSync automatically synchronizes the following:

    Contacts
